How To Make A Cartoon Animation
When it comes to making cartoon animations there are a lot of things to consider. In this article you can learn how to choose the right software, what skills you need and how to acquire them.
The first thing you need is some good cartoon animation software. When it comes to 2D animation software, which this article is about, there are quite a few programs to choose from. I spend a lot of time researching what software to get for my creating my own cartoon animations. The software I ended up with is called ToonBoom Studio.
ToonBoom is what I recommend that everybody start with as it has everything you need to create very good animations. It doesn't even have to be in a cartoon style as you can animate anything you want in ToonBoom Studio 6.
If you choose ToonBoom you'll be of to a great start and have all the tools you need. No extra software is needed besides ToonBoom Studio to create a complete cartoon animation movie, with sound and everything. You can read the ToonBoom Studio 6 Review right here on the site
Do I have to be good at drawing to create cartoon animations?
The great thing about ToonBoom Studio is that you can start small. It is quite easy to create cartoon animations like the ones you see on cartoon network where the charters move a little like puppets.
There are loads of resources online where you can learn how to draw your own cartoon characters. After you have drawn your characters, either on paper on directly in your animation software, you cut out the individual parts that makes up a character, link them together and start animating. You don't have to do hand drawn frame-by-frame animation, which is very time consuming.
For their 2D animation movies Disney use frame-by-frame animation, it looks amazing, but if you are a one-man show you're most likely better of starting with the puppet approach described above.
Learning how to animate "realistic" cartoon characters
How many animation techniques you need to master depends on what your ambitions are. To create your own cartoon animations in the fluent style of Disney is obviously going to take a long time to learn. Can you learn it on you own? Yes, but you will probably be much better of taking an education as an animator or at least a course in animation.
If you don't have the money to take a course in animation, but want to improve you animation skills a great place start is a book I own myself called The Animators Survival Kit. In this book Richard Williams explains the many concepts of character animation. The book is beautifully illustrated and written in a language that is easy to understand.
Character animation is the most difficult to learn, but if you learn to master it you will be able to animate anything you want. It's one of the greatest books on cartoon animation both for beginners and experts. I warmly recommend The Animators Survival Kit by Richard Williams.
